Where do scientists begin the story of Earths history?

One place to start is by looking at the age of the materials that make up the Earth itself.

In a stratigraphical context objects closer to the surface are more recent in time relative to items deeper in the ground.

Although relative dating can work well in certain areas, several problems arise.

There are two main categories by which they do this: relative age dating and absolute age dating.

In relative age dating, scientists study a material and compare it to other similar materials in order to establish a timeline.

The Greeks consider the first Olympic Games as the beginning or 776 BC.
